About Botox

Botox is an injectable product composed of purified botulinum toxin. It is the most well-known injectable in a category referred to as “neuromodulators,” which also includes similar products like Dysport.

Botox works by temporarily disrupting nerve signals to the muscles where it is injected, which means that patients can no longer make extreme facial expressions that cause dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that form when you squint, frown, or smile, such as crow’s feet, glabellar lines, or horizontal forehead lines.

With modern injection techniques, however, you can still freely express yourself and avoid the “frozen” look.

Who Can Benefit from Botox®?

Many patients can benefit from Botox, assuming that they do not have specific medical conditions such as bleeding disorders or certain allergies. Before you receive injections, your health history will be reviewed to ensure that the product is safe for you. Your concerns will also be evaluated to make sure that Botox is your most effective option. For example, some wrinkles are caused by volume loss rather than repetitive motion, meaning that other injectables are more suitable. Botox is typically used for:

  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose
  • Squint lines or crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Platysmal muscle bands (vertical lines) often visible on the neck
  • Lower facial muscles such as the masseter muscle (to lessen the ‘squareness’ and fullness of the lateral jawline), wrinkles around the mouth, and turning down at the corners of the mouth.
*Individual results may vary.
